Baker Cup Recipients
The Baker Cup is awarded to the undergraduate chapter which most effectively focuses attention upon religious, ethical, and social service activities in its daily conduct. Thomas J. Howells (Ohio State 1897) presented the bowl at the 1916 Ekklesia. It is named in honor of former Archon President Newton D. Baker (Johns Hopkins 1872, Washington and Lee 1894), who served as US Secretary of War during World War One.
Baker himself worked out the phrase inscribed around the outside rim, "True Education Discloses and Develops Our Capacity for Service." The inside rim reads "The Newton D. Baker Social Service Cup, Presented 1916 by Thomas H. Howells, Awarded Annually to the Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta which has Excelled in Religious, Ethical, and Social Service Activities."
