Phi Gamma Delta In The Korean War

Here is the roster of Phi Gamma Delta members killed in action or who died as a result of wounds or illness contracted in the Korean War. The number stands at twenty-one. These gold star Phi Gams join the 506 from World War II and 127 from World War I. They include one Korean politician, J. Kiusic Kimm (Roanoke 1903).

This list was compiled by Executive Secretary and Editor Cecil J. Wilkinson (Ohio Wesleyan 1917) and published in the Phi Gamma Delta magazine.

  • Jerome Boris Christine (Purdue 1945), engineer corps first-lieutenant; missing in action in Korea on July 30, 1950, and presumed dead. Believed to be the first Phi Gam fatality in the war.

  • Louis Leland Anthis (Oklahoma 1946), infantry first-lieutenant; killed in action near Ogak, Korea, on August 23, 1950.

  • David Welty Gibson (Williams 1946), army first-lieutenant, 27th Regimental Combat Team of the 25th Division; taken prisoner and presumed killed by enemy on September 9, 1950.

  • Grant Ridgway Ellis (Pennsylvania 1946), marine corps first-lieutenant; killed in action in Korea on September 30, 1950.

  • Lamar Brindley Longshore (Alabama 1949), air force lieutenant, killed in action in Korea on October 19, 1950.

  • Robert Charles Hays (Michigan 1947), navy junior grade lieutenant; killed in action near Koto-Ri, Korea, on November 5, 1950.

  • Lester Thomas Chase (Dartmouth 1939), marine corps captain; killed in action near Koto-Ri, Korea, on November 29, 1950.

  • William Franklin Herrington (Idaho 1940), infantry major; killed in action near Kunu-Ri, Korea, on November 30, 1950.

  • James Lathem Ables (Texas 1947), marine corps second-lieutenant; killed in action at Hongchon, Korea, on April 29, 1951.

  • John Herbert Fields (Columbia 1940), infantry captain; killed in action near Chunchon, Korea, on May 18, 1951.

  • James Joseph Kane (Indiana 1952), marine corps sergeant; killed in action in Tong-Myon Mountain area, Korea, on June 19, 1951.

  • Jeremiah David Shanahan (Amherst 1944), marine corps lieutenant, killed in action in Korea on July 27, 1951.

  • George Henry Ramer (Bucknell 1950), marine corps first-lieutenant; killed in action on Heartbreak Ridge, Korea on September 12, 1951; posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.

  • George Alfred Singer (Washington and Jefferson 1950), marine corps lieutenant; killed in action in Korea on October 17, 1951.

  • J. Kiusic Kimm (Roanoke 1903), Korean political leader, captured by Communists 9-17-1950 and died a captive in North Korea 10-18-1951.

  • Craig Carson Angel (California 1929), navy commander; died November 20, 1951, of a virus contracted in Korea.

  • William Johnston Lyman, Jr. (Davidson 1943, North Carolina 1946), infantry captain; killed in action near Yunchon, Korea, on January 18, 1952.

  • Jules Theodore Bouckhuyt (Syracuse 1949), artillery first-lieutenant; killed in action at Kahron-ni, Korea, on June 11, 1952.

  • Philip Cotcher Hinkel (Illinois Wesleyan 1949), airborne infantry sergeant; died August 31, 1952, of wounds received in Korea.

  • John B. Huckin (Bucknell 1949), infantry second-lieutenant; killed in action near Kumyha, Korea, on October 15, 1952.

  • Darrell Jay Hansen (Iowa 1952), infantry second lieutenant; killed in action near Kumwa, Korea on July 16, 1953-- incidentally the second anniversary of his initiation into Phi Gamma Delta.
