Phi Gamma Delta In Vietnam

Vietnam - HalyburtonThis list includes obituaries listed in The Phi Gamma Delta magazine of 1964 through early 1970, with more research to come.

One name is omitted: naval aviator Lt. (j.g.) Porter A. Halyburton (Davidson 1963) (pictured left), proclaimed dead as of October 17, 1965 after his plane was shot down. A memorial portrait was placed in the Delta Kappa Chapter's house at Davidson, and a memorial stone erected by his family. At right is the picture used in his obituary published in The Phi Gamma Delta.

But Halyburton was alive! His release from the infamous "Hanoi Hilton" came after seven and a half years. Today, Commander Halyburton, USN Retired, has the 'memorial' portrait from the chapter house hanging in his home. Many web pages online describe his POW experience, as does the book Two Souls Indivisible (2005) by James S. Hirsch.
